‘at’ll do pig…. ‘at’ll do

I am of the belief that any profound cinematic experience is a possible window to the soul. In other words, if a particular film or scene hit you in the stomach there is something there to be known that informs who you are, who God is, how you experience beauty, etc. So with said prologue: I headed up north to catsit for the folks and found myself riffling through their VHS collection and to my delight found “Babe.” I was weeping for the last 10 minutes, kid you not. The very humble, decent, farmer being mocked and shamed as he and his pig, against all odds and expectations, win the sheep-dog contest in profound fashion. Instead of brutally barking and hissing at the sheep, through kindness and compassion the wee pig navigates the course while his master stands at attention. I am practically choking up just recalling it now. What is it with this story!?!

So did you have such an emotional responses to said film, or perhaps something else has unexpectedly hit you: American Ninja 4 anyone?

Definitely had a similar experience with Danny Boyle’s film “Millions.” Aside from being the cutest kid in the world, Damian is imbued with one of the clearest senses of right and wrong, and his love and charity infect pretty much everyone else in the film. When all the rest of his family and neighborhood cave to avarice and greed, Damian’s innocent plea to help others ends the film in a way that trumps almost all other happy endings. Happy weepy. If you watch this film and you aren’t moved then you should star as one of the zombies in Danny Boyle’s other brilliant film, “28 days later.”

Yes, “Babe” effected me that way too. I’m trying to remember how and why I watched it….. was it at Linda’s insistence? Was I at my parents up late watching cable after everyone else had gone to sleep? Not sure… getting old.

In the Lion King when Mufasa sacrifices his life to save his son, I cried my own tears. Then again when Aslan was willingly murdered for the sake of others. Can you see the pattern? I think my main trigger is sacrifice. Also, if it is a father figure it gets to me. But I think the innocence of animals can make the message in movies more pure than if it was played out by humans.
