Never Let Me Go (5/5)

Posted on 9 May 2011

A most astonishing cross-genre film by one of the great music video directors (Romanek did Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” and Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” among others). Based on a Japanese novel that landed dozens of critical accolades, it played like a low budget classy version of The Island as directed by Sofia Coppala. An elegantly paced sci-fi alternate universe that ultimately reveals the nature of empathy and dignity. Or as I chiefly enjoyed it, a story about a boy who learns how to create to prove he is lovable.

I saw this because of your review, and despite the high expectations it surpassed them all. I have never loved watching a tragic movie more. Jena and I are still unpacking why we loved it so much. It’s an amazing piece of life-affirming story telling. Nothing is overdone, nothing is underdone. My heart swelled but not at all in a cheap way. Five for five indeed.

So delighted to hear this Patrick. It is surely in my top ten for the year.
