Duplicity (3/5)

A fine production with fine acting and a decent script. Whenever Julia Roberts tries to be funny, it almost always falls flat. I am a Clive fan though, and he carried the scenes well enough.

Night At The Museum: Battle Of The Smithsonian (3/5)

These films make a ton at the box office and my Little Bro is a fan. A fine mix of light comedy, adventure, and culture. I left in a good mood and have no complaints.

The Hangover (3/5)

Not a bad concept for a comedy, but the childish adult male saga that seems to pervade a half dozen summer films is getting tiresome--probably touches too close to home. I did have a good laugh at my favorite comedian. Not so funny was the gangster character--ugh. The silver lining is that Galifianakis may actually get some good scripts now that he is a bankable ...

Breaking Away (3/5)

A late 70s battle of the classes, bike race picture featuring Bloomington, Indiana as a main character. Why did films look so bad in this era? There must be scientific reasons.

Vantage Point (3/5)

Decent acting and script, great editing and photography despite a few poorly conceived action shots. Quite forgettable.

Hunger (3/5)

Every short while, I try to watch historically important films such as this, with their realism, bleakness, lofty ideals, martyrdom, which then reminds me how much I enjoy film as entertainment. I will say that the first ten minutes of exposition were quite clever; focusing on the tragic reality of the Irish prison guard life--we see him check underneath his car for ...

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (3/5)

Corporations can be so depressing. I would like to believe that all the greedy assholes who ran this thing into the ground got their comeuppance, but I doubt it. I have a thing for justice.

My Kid Could Paint That (3/5)

To quote one of the art critics regarding the titular 5-year-old's work: "Nobody is saying 'fuck you' in this picture [painting], she is just saying, 'I am a happy girl who loves painting'."

Gran Torino (3/5)

Eastwood ends his acting career as a bad-ass racist neighborhood grump. As a director he often prints the first take, which can work well if you're shooting veterans. I wonder if he should have given his younger bloods a few more takes though, some of the scenes are wince inducing.

Funny Games (3/5)

I really do not know what to think of this film. I peeked at the critics for some explanation and they were all markedly divided. I don't think anyone rated it ok. It is either brilliant satire/criticism of the torture film genre or just another of the sort. To Haneke's credit, he doesn't show the gore on screen like we all expect, but the menace is still there ...
