The Karate Kid (2/5)

Surely, a good dose of nostalgia with the finest company (thank you Meaghers for the movie night). The racism wasn’t as nasty as I was expecting–there was the oriental flute theme that preluded Pat’s scenes (who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, surprisingly), but we decided that his bad English and other stereotypical Asianesses were not derogatory or inflamatory in nature. That doesn’t mean Asians weren’t negatively affected by this film back in 1984. But what do I know.

Stereotypes and the the what-what. But it plays, man, it plays. Why? Always the best question. People love an underdog and you could write a paper on racism and such but the majority wasn’t interested they just love a victory over an asshole. Black, white or yellow. Everyone hates an easy villain.

Got something to say?
