Selective reading.

Thomas Jefferson famously clipped out pieces of Scripture he didn’t care for. I think this bit from Ephesians ranks pretty high for me (never mind the stuff on genocide or hell). A favorite pastor of mine used it as his benediction and it always made me squirm.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

More than we can imagine? I can imagine some pretty basic things that don’t seem to make God’s radar. And I don’t really think God is in the business of wowing us humans anymore.

I used to give God the benefit of the doubt on such matters, it is getting harder with time though.
